Transport

About 25% of all CO2 emissions in the UK come from the use of motorised transport. Workplace and school travel plans are excellent ways of addressing transport issues and might involve anything from car sharing to setting up walking buses to introducing a new bus service. Individuals can also join car share clubs. Considering conversion to LPG fuel is another very realistic possibility for cutting the levels of CO2 and particulate emissions caused by driving.

Government policy is to get more people off the roads onto public transport but several years into their policy, car use is still cheaper than public transport alternatives. Witness the extending line of cars backed up from Highnam roundabout on a weekday morning or the ensuing pall of yellow air over the Severn Vale. Surely we are more sophitocated than to wish this to continue? For real progress individuals need to act at all levels for change.

It is incumbent upon those of us who do run cars to ensure that we do everything possible to mitigate their damaging effects. Most journeys by car are short and walking, cycling and sharing are good alternatives, especially for the school run. Keeping a car in good working order and keeping speeds down also cut emissions. Many local shops (and milkmen) offer delivery services which are even free avoiding the need for frequent supermarket trips by car.

One of the worst transport issues on the horizon is the growth in cheap air travel with the aviation industry wanting to double in size by 2030. Airport and airlines pay no fuel tax effectively being subsidised each year to the tune of £5 billion while they also make a significant contribution to global warming.

If we really want to see an improvement in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and cleaner air then we need to ensure that the world's leading industrialised nations have policies that are going to improve on Kyoto targets.

Plans are afoot in the Valencia region of Spain to convert the 240,000 tonnes of waste oranges into bioethanol with each tonne of pulp able to fill the average car's petrol tank, producing 80 litres of fuel. A new plant is expected to produce 37.5 million litres of bioethanol, and locals are expected to pay around 40% less per litre than they do for petrol. Local officials claim they can reduce the region's dependency on petrol by up to 40% while creating 2,500 new jobs. Spain as with other EU countries has the goal of producing 6% fuel with bioethanol or oilseed biodiesel by 2010. If successful this would account for 1% of the country's total transport consumption.
