Climate change is now widely accepted as the largest long-term environmental problem facing humanity and its major cause is carbon dioxide emissions from energy use. A not-for-profit organisation formed in 1992, we've rapidly become a leading figure in the fight to address climate change. Our aim is to promote sustainable energy, while reducing consumption and carbon emissions in the domestic and transport sectors throughout the UK. Almost half of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions come from energy we use every day - at home and when we travel. By saving energy we can all help prevent climate change.

If you had been alive a hundred years ago, and went for a summer's walk in the countryside, you would have expected to see a wealth of butterflies. Today, their numbers have declined seriously and five of our 59 resident species have become extinct. The future of nearly half our remaining species hangs in the balance as they continue to decline in many areas. Moths (the largely nocturnal cousins of butterflies) have also disappeared at an alarming rate and over 50 of our 900 larger species are now highly threatened. The intensification of farming and forestry have led to widespread destruction of flower-rich meadows, hedgerows, ancient woodland and wild corners – all crucial habitats for butterflies and other wildlife. Wild areas have also been lost to housing and roads, and many remaining fragments are deteriorating due to neglect. Our native deciduous woodlands, home to many of our more sensitive butterflies, have also changed out of all recognition and have either become too shady for butterflies or replaced with dense conifer plantations. It may be impossible to put the clock back completely but much can be done to increase butterflies and moths and save threatened species from extinction.

Organic Milk has benefits for the environment, for animal management and crucially for health. Organic cows are not routinely treated with antibiotics or given hormones as standard, neither is the land on which they graze treated with pesticides. Studies have found that the increased use of pesticides and antibiotics have led to a reduction in effectiveness of antibiotics in humans, and that hormones used in the milk production process may have an impact on human fertility.

The Stepping Forward project has carried out a resource flow analysis, ecological footprint analysis and sustainability assessment of the South West of England. The full reports can be read online (from the menu on the left) or downloaded as PDF documents. An Overview and Key Findings, plus other background information on the project, can be accessed from the menu above. The Resource Flow Report illustrates the flow of resources through the region’s boundaries and economy and is a vital tool for sustainable resource management. The Ecological Footprint Report illustrates the environmental impacts associated with the consumption patterns of the residents of the region. The Ecological Footprint concept enables the comparison between resources consumed and resources available and therefore illustrates how ecologically sustainable those consumption patterns are. The aim of Stepping Forward is to stimulate a healthy and informed debate, which will lead to the formation of evidence-based policies, and help all of us understand the actions required to realise the vision of a more sustainable future.

ounded in 1990, the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) aims to raise awareness of the impact of excessive car use and help individuals and organisations to make positive changes in their travel habits. ETA's mission is to be the ethical alternative to other motoring organisations, by providing high quality services to everyone concerned about the impact of transport on the environment; in doing so, we will generate funds for ETA’s campaigns. So why ETA? * We are the world's first climate-neutral motoring organisation, which means that we are offsetting the carbon emissions of our organisation. * We started Green Transport Week in 1992 which aims to demonstrate how we can all reduce our dependency on cars. * We inaugurated National Car Free Day held on 22nd September every year. * We conduct and commission research into environmental transport issues. * ETA produces a Car Buyers Guide annually for people greener vehicles. * We have firmly established environmental and ethical business policies to ensure that our day-to-day activities respect the environment.
Transport 2000’s mission is to find sustainable solutions to transport problems, solutions that reduce the social and environmental impact of transport. Its vision is of a country where traffic no longer dominates our lives, where many of our journeys can be made on foot, by cycle or using public transport, and where you don’t need a car to enjoy the countryside or city life. Transport 2000 seeks movement towards a society that relies less on cars, lorries and planes and makes more use of rail, buses, trams, cycling and walking. We need to adapt our towns and cities, and plan new settlements, to reduce the need to travel and rediscover the advantages of combining homes, work and services on a local basis. The reality is that the impact of road traffic in particular is growing by the day, presenting us with congestion, climate change, pollution, health problems, noise, danger and reduction in our quality of life. This is the background against which Transport 2000 aims to promote real solutions to transport problems.
They say that the simple ideas are often the best, and BigBarn is no exception. Big Barn is a virtual farmers’ market. It uses the web to help re-build local food supply chains. A local food supply chain reconnects consumers with producers, reduces food miles, improves food access and diet, increases the diversity of agriculture and helps build communities. Visitors to the BigBarn interactive map-based website, www.bigbarn.co.uk, can type in a postcode from anywhere in the UK. The website then creates a map with icons representing all the local food producers in a given radius of that postcode. The whole range of produce is represented, from butchers to farm shops, farmers markets to smallholders. It’s free to use and those who register receive regular, postcode-specific emails with news and offers for their region. BigBarn is working with producers to make buying local more convenient. It set up a meat co-operative in Bedfordshire which now supplies eleven local schools and, after a successful trial, is hoping to win the contract to supply another 180. Explains founder and Bedfordshire farmer Anthony Davison, “Big Barn is a simple idea that addresses a number of issues. It allows people to buy quality food from their local area at a fair price. They get a good deal and the producers get to sell directly, giving the local economy a welcome boost.”
